Lake Tritriva and its loving legend

The African story of Romeo and Juliet

Lake Tritriva is located near Antsirabe, on top of the volcanic Mount Tritriva. It is shaped like Madagascar and has a depth of 160 metres. However, beyond the beauty of the surroundings and its crystal-clear waters, this place hides an incredible and sad legend.

A couple in love, Rabeniomby and Ravolahanta, committed suicide there. Legend has it that they loved each other, but their parents did not accept their union because Ravolahanta was from the royal family and he was from a lower social class. Their union had become impossible and they decided to drown themselves in order to remain together forever.

Their souls are said to have been represented in a tree with intertwined trunks on a rock on the shore. Legend has it that it bleeds when one tries to cut it.

It is also said that when an important event is going to take place in Madagascar, the lake turns red.

Finally, it is worth noting that it has a rare feature: the water level drops during the rainy season and rises during the dry season.
